Balance sheet
The rest of what you own and owe.
Add a house, a bank account, a boat or a plane, art, a private business, life insurance, a loan you made, and what you owe — a mortgage, a home-equity line, an auto or student loan, a credit card. Each one is an account with a type, in the same book as your brokerage accounts.
The type names the account. A loan you made and a loan you took are different types. Amounts still come from the positions and cash recorded on that account.
- Brokerage and retirement
- Individual, joint, trust, estate, and entity accounts. IRAs, an individual 401(k), a 529, a Coverdell ESA, and an HSA.
- Banking
- Checking, savings, certificates of deposit, and money market accounts.
- Real estate
- A primary residence, a second home, a rental, land, or commercial property.
- Vehicles and other property
- A car, motorcycle, RV, boat, or aircraft, plus art, jewelry, and other property.
- Private interests and insurance
- A private business or partnership interest. Cash-value and term life insurance, and annuities.
- Loans and liabilities
- A loan or mortgage you hold. A mortgage, home-equity line, auto loan, student loan, personal loan, or credit card you owe. Cryptocurrency and a pension, too.
